Certified Nursing Assistants & Geriatric Nursing Assistants
Duties:
- Provides personal care and related services which includes: the ADL’ which is consistent with the State regulations, delegated and supervised by a registered nurse.
- Tasks to be performed by a CNA/GNA/HHA must be assigned by and performed under the supervision of an RN who will be responsible for client services provided by the CNA/GNA/HHA.
- Under no circumstances may a CNA/GNA/HHA be assigned to receive or reduce any intravenous procedures, or any other sterile or invasive procedures.
Responsibilities:
- Follows the plan of Care (POC) to provide safe and competent service to and for the client.
- Helps client to maintain good personal hygiene and assists in maintaining a healthful, clean and safe environment.
- Plans and prepares nutritious meals, runs errands when client is in need.
- Assists the client with ambulation and transfers ordered by a physician and approve by the nurse’s plan of care and when needed.
- Assists the therapy personnel as needed with rehabilitative processes.
- Encourages the client to become as independent as possible according to the plan of care.
- Attempts to promote the client’s mental alertness through involvement in activities of interest.
- Gives simple emotional and psychological support to the client and other members of the family which transmit trust and confidentiality.
- Reports any change in the client’s mental or physical condition or in the home situation to the staff nurse, or to the administrator.
- Performs routine light housekeeping tasks to ensure a safe and clean environment for the client.
- Documents clinical notes as well as ADL’s on a daily basis.
- Confirms on a weekly basis the scheduling of client visits so that other necessary visits by staff nurse can be coordinated.
- Works with personnel and other community agencies involved in the client’s service as directed by the nurse or the administrator.
- Attends MANDATORY in-service meetings as required by the regulation and agency policy.
- Notifies the Agency of absences due to illness, emergency leave, normal vacation periods, or special professional meetings which will affect agreed service with the agency.
Job Conditions:
- The ability to travel, drive and the ability to access client’s home which may not be routinely wheelchair accessible are required.
- Hearing, eyesight and physical dexterity must be sufficient to perform a physical assessment of the client’s condition to perform client care.
- On occasion, may be required to bend, stoop, reach and move client weight up to 250 pounds; lift and/or carry up to 30 pounds.
- Must be able to communicate clearly, both verbally in writing, in English.
- Must have reliable transportation.
Equipment Operation:
- Use of BP cuff, thermometer and stethoscope, proper hand washing materials.
Qualifications:
- Must have high school diploma & at least 2 years of experience.
- Must have up-dated CPR/First Aid certification.
- Ambulation and transfer of clients, including positioning
- Basic first aid and CPR training
- Caring for clients with special conditions and needs that are in the scope private duty
- Assistance with bathing, toileting, grooming, shaving, dental care, dressing and assistance with feeding
- Home management and medication management
- Home safety and sanitation
- Infection control in the home
- Medically related activities to include doctor visits and knowledge of how to take proper vital signs
- Proper nutritional information
- Must be free from health problems that may be injurious to client, co-workers and must present appropriate evidence to substantiate this
- Must comprehend the basis of personal care, housekeeping and meal preparation
- Must understand and respect clients including ethics and confidentiality
- Must have a cleared background screening
- Must have a current CPR certification
- Must have current physical and immunizations
- First Phase – Phone Interview with Personality Test & Skills, Knowledge & Competency Test (Pass with 85% – 1.5 hrs)
